New Build House

The design of this new build house in St Albans evolved from discussions with the client who were inspired by different themes.

The key criteria were that the house was spacious and bright with a feeling of openness and connectivity between all internal areas and the garden beyond.

The main plan of the house was kept as a simple oblong with return to the back with bedrooms at each corner. The hall and stair area sit within a double height space with a mezzanine arrangement at first floor to connect the landing to the open plan sociable family areas on the ground floor. As a counterpoint to the open plan layout of the house, spaces were designed in for quiet contemplation, with internal balconies to the rear with views out over the garden.

The master bedroom is at loft level and was designed to be open plan, taking inspiration from a trip that the clients took to New York.

The house is wrapped in external insulation to improve thermal performance with timber cladding to give a natural warmth to the appearance of the house.
